Mike Pitan Talks West Coast Steelheading
Переглядів 7372 місяці тому
On a recent trip from this season, we asked OPST Ambassador Mike Pitan what was different about coming out West to target steelhead vs targeting the steelhead of his Great Lakes home. There is something super cool about being that close to the salt water and targeting fish that have only been in the freshwater for hours or less. But don't let us tell you!

We put this rod to the test this Winter and have been please...
Breaking Down a Run

In today's video, Mike McGovney talks about fishing a steelhead run, specifically one that has a narrow top and wide tailout. Many anglers will skip the top of the run, or start casting too far if they do decide to start high. The move is to start short, making short casts until you get out of the top of the run. Sit back and enjoy!

New Micro D2 Tips for Trout Spey and Single-Handed Fly Fishing
Is there much line twist. I like the the idea of the smooth but I don’t like my lime twisting up with your short I use a swivel and no twist.
If the line is installed correctly there are no line twists.
Also which version full 6/2 or 4/4
That will depend on the water depth.
Mike great video. On a typical 5wf line which D2 t6 or t8 for small streamers?
The T6
Where do you get that power pro cutting spool?
Not Sure
This looks like carp would smash it!
They sure would!
Just come back to this after a while to get a refresher. I love this fly, Dave is a wizard.
He sure is!
Man what reel is that one Ed's 3 weight? I have to have one, that thing is absolutely gorgeous. I love your products, I have 4 heads and half a dozen tips, rod wraps and reel cases, and a sick hat 😅 Much love from the Great Lakes.
Goood Dog !
Thx for your tips 👍🏻
I wasnt aware of the "Scandit" trick. Nice!
👍👍👍✌️
Very cool. Thanks!
No. i cant buy a feater like that in any shape or form..sorry...It's Agerhøne.
Sorry to hear that!
Thanks for the video Mike. That a great and very helpful technique.
Thanks for the video James.
Thanks for watching!
best tip I’ve seen in a long time thanks for sharing
Received my new SHS rod. I’ve owned to more than a few rods as I’ve been at this for a long time. I can honestly say this is a top of the line Skagit casting beast!!! Thanks Mike for the time you spent chatting with me and shipping the rod so quickly.
Glad you like it!
What’s the barred flash called Mike? Thanks for the video bud.
We're not sure it looks like barred flashabou
I can identify with you Mike as I love my Great Lakes steelheading. I was able to swing for steelhead in BC and was wowed by the water clarity and the scenery all of which made for a great experience.
Thanks for the video Mike. I’m an OPST guy for all the reasons you mentioned. Throughout my day of swinging I always encounter obstacles such as trees overhead or deep high banks that keep me pinned the the bank, with my OPST rod and line I’m able to cast were I wouldn’t be able to otherwise.
Great info Ed, can’t thank you enough for your videos. I will apply this to my swinging. I love watching you cast!! So much for me to learn from just watching!
Very nicely done, great pattern! Thank you.
Many thanks!
Great looking pattern, I’ll have to tie a few up for the box
Thanks for watching!
What’s the difference between these D2 tips and the Micro Skagit Sink Tips 7’5” 60 grains - apart from the extra 7” and 4 grains, which seem negligible - on a single hand rod (thinking 6wt 9’ rod)?
What’s the difference between these D2 tips and the Micro Skagit Sink Tips 7’5” 60 grains - apart from the extra 7” and 4 grains, which seem negligible?
Thanks for sharing this pattern. I was wondering what kind of hook that you used on this fly. Cheers!
Ahrex HR418 Size 4. It's their Bomber hook.
@@OPSkagit Much appreciated.
👍👍👍✌️
Thanks for watching!
Well explained. Now, let’s say I have a 9’ 6wt and I want to do a little indicator nymphing with a big size 8 or 6 tungsten head stone nymph (small to medium sized steelhead). What would be your choice of floating tip length and leader?
What tip would you use on a 9’ 6wt and a 225 gr commando smooth, T6 or T8 - or both?
Both depending on river conditions
Thanks for the news Mike. I own several OPST rods and enjoy them very much so it’s always great to see something new coming down the road from a great company.
You'll like them!
Good to see you James, hope your doing well
Great tips and presentation. One question: in your OPST recommendation chart for 8wt swich you would recommend 325 grain. Here you are using 450. Is it depending on the rod action? Greetings
It is dependant on rod action, although I don't believe we recommend a 325 for an 8wt Switch.
How do you connect the t material to the fly line and then the tippet?
Loop to Loop connections
@@OPSkagit sorry I mean the cut to length ones. What all do you need to make a new loop?
@@OPSkagit I found a vid how to do it. Thanks for the quick response.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Very nice tie 👌 For much smaller sizes, you could maybe try the Ryugi Infini Hobbit Offset Wide Gap Worm Hooks - down to #8. You’d have to adapt the tie though as the shape is slightly different. What size/weight dumbbells do you use with the #4 hook? Cheers
Now we’re talking 👍👍 A very common situation and a great way to deal with the issue. Nicely explained - and filmed. And just one spool change away from switching back to floating dries. Excellent. Any recommended tippet length to complement the 5’ sinking micro tip? Cheers
Excellent video, thanks!
Great video, thanks for the finer points!!!
I’d love to spend a day on the water with this guy. Just an encyclopedia of fishing knowledge. I’ve learned countless things from his videos over the years. And it all works!
Thanks for watching!
Buy a spinning rod and a handful of spoons 😜
What's the fun in that?!
You might not have to wait for that thousandth cast 😉 Only kidding 😊 Your stuff is legit 👍
Thanks for the support!@@SiuslawOR
Given er the ol Goren! Thanks for sharing!
I bought a micro Skagit rod last month, everything is good except for the extra 80$ tax,it is a little bit expensive
Magnet box in the frame with a spare key is a life saver. I locked myself out of my car in the middle of nowhere in 15 degree weather and had to break a window. No cell service. Drove right to an auto zone and got a frame magnet.
You say it's an 8#. But 425gr. is light for an 8# double handed rod. Isn't it? Or is it 8# single handed rating?
Our lines are lighter than others on the market. If we were to put another brands head in the rod it would be heavier.
In UK ratings the rod would be 7 wt
Folks, just throwing my two cents in. I know you’re excited to show off a new product(been there, it’s exciting and fun to see your customers reaction) but! I think the excitement got the best of you here. Presenting in a monotone blasé fashion, no closeups of the product. I know, i know, you have a prototype in your hand(that’s my point). When you have your product dialed in and ready, make your video and announcement! You will get a smashin response for sure. Sorry for being that guy but I really dig what you guys are doing and just feel like this could’ve been way better than what it was. Btw, a good friend will tell you the truth, a bad one will tell you what you want to hear. 😉Go get em tiger🤘
You're a taller, not a buyer so they don't need you anyway, haha.
@@TimBorrego-kh1mk nah. I am a buyer and have my eyes on the SHS. Just gave some constructive criticism, I got nothing but respect for OPST. Without them, most of us would have never heard of skagit! 🤘
as with any rod these days... what's your warranty/replacement program... even if not a warranty - how easy or difficult will it be to get a new tip section if you were to break or lose one?
I saw that they had rear rod tip on selled
Should of said it 15 years ago, ja ja
Dave it is always a pleasure watching you cast. Hopefully i will run into you on the water again. I will have to look into this casting system, looks pretty darn good. Anytime you can cast with little effort is a win win and especially as i get older.
Terrific explanation.... some more discussion on leader length with weighted fly would be appreciated.😂
Thanks for watching!
epic film ! thanks
